ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE CYPRUS ONCOLOGICAL SOCIETY (OEK) – 03/11/2022
COMMUNICATION
In light of recent public statements regarding the mammography and ultrasound screening protocols followed in the healthy female population, the Cyprus Oncology Society (CEOS) wishes to inform the public of the following:
- The correctness of the protocols followed is not in doubt since they are consistent with the relevant European directives, which are adopted by both the Greek Cancer Society and the National Cancer Committee.
- The population screening concerns women aged 45-74 years.
- For women at high risk for developing cancer, such as those with a genetic predisposition, a very high-risk family history, and a history of radiotherapy to the chest due to malignancy, special guidelines for early detection are followed.
- Performing an ultrasound examination from the age of 20 is not scientifically documented.
- The great importance of breast self-examination and seeking medical advice in the event of detecting a nodule is emphasized, without this necessarily meaning that it is malignant.
Finally, OEK emphasizes that informing the public about sensitive issues such as cancer should be done with caution, expressing scientifically documented positions.
